That realization hit me hard! Me, replaceable? But I have all these skills, I am so dedicated and loyal to my work. I do what it takes (and more). Surely I cannot be that easily replaced?
But the reality is this: we ALL are replaceable at work. And yes, quite easily. No matter your position, once you leave (for whatever reason – illness, accident, burnout, or worse) you will be replaced in no time. Will you be missed? Sure, maybe, temporarily. But your work will be picked up by the next person, and even though they will not be you, they will manage the work. So the company is happy and has moved on. And you? You may still be licking your wounds – after all this time, replaced, just like that. Your ego is not happy.
But here’s the thing: once you truly realize that you are indeed replaceable, what burden is lifted off you as well! If you are replaceable, it means you don’t have to go to all lengths for your work. It means you don’t need to prioritize work matters over personal matters. It means you can focus on other things outside of work as well, because work is only one (smallish) part of life. Work is just that, work. It is not who you are. If you allow it to become who you are, then the hit will be extra hard when the day comes that you will be replaced (and it will).
The good news is, there is an area of life where you are not replaceable. At home. With your kids, your partner, your parents, your friends, your pets. This is where you are not replaceable, this is where you are who you are. Yes, there are other people who can replace you in what you do there too (at home for example), but not in the love you bring, the care you show, and the beautiful human you are.
So next time you are slaving away for work, going above and beyond, and potentially crossing your own boundaries to do so, ask yourself – am I spending my time and energy in the area that is right for me? Or do I need to look at my priorities in life a bit more closely again?
